If you are just starting a business one of the most important items on your list to get done and completed is to establish your identity with a logo and business card.
Great advice, grafikrtist, does anyone else have things to add to the list?
Jim
Appearances (store front, employees, clean area) are key as well, especially for a start-up because you're only going to get 1 first impression.
If you are starting a business, always start with a business plan, keep it professional.
Be clear what you want to achieve. You are communicating with the outside world.
As you said a logo and a business card, however make your logo stand out,
also make make business card different (maybe turn it 90 degrees)
Make sure you establish an identity that achieves your vision.

While the specifics will depend on the particular type of business, I think a logo can set the mood for the entire project. Great input grafikrtist! I would also say that having a clear mission statement helps because this helps you define clear and articulate goals to measure your progress against.
I like this advice. Keep your brand consistent! Logo with a color scheme, use that look for you business card
and all printed marketing material. You look super professional when everything is consistent.

Nice response, Steve, it really is about the whole package.

What does this have to do with the topic? If you are going to spam, can you at least be intelligent about it?
For an online business, a decent website and a good ranking on Google.
Another thing to consider is your own appearance (and behavior). If you consider yourself a 'walking billboard' for your company, you should be mindful that every interaction you have is with a potential client or referral. Watch your language, dress nice at all times (no more slippers/sweat pants and curlers to the convenience store
) and think in terms of mentioning your business to everyone you meet. You never know where your next client will come from...

As a professional. Learn to be quiet: learn to be still.
Live your life just as you’ve been living it, (for a while).
Don’t change anything, except little things
