What's the difference in DVD formats?

Can someone please explain in simple non-technical terms:

What is the difference between DVD +R, and DVD -R formats?

I don't think that you will find that there is much difference in actual usage. Current computer and home DVD drives read and write to both without any issue (I tend to use DVD+R but only because that is what I started with and I am a creature of habit).
