my name is mrs knight and me and my husband had started our business about august 29th 2011 and we were trying to
place our meat loaf sauce in the stores and get it on the market . Now we are trying to get it copy written and patented as well but i have came
to an dead end being i heard quite a few different things about getting things copy written and patened . Many people say to get it copy written
makes your stuff open for the public i searching all over the web and now me and my husband are confused!!!!!
Mrs. Knight,
Copyright law does not protect recipes that are mere listings of ingredients. Nor does it protect other mere listings of ingredients such as those found in formulas, compounds, or prescriptions. Copyright protection may, however, extend to substantial literary expression—a description, explanation, or illustration, for example—that accompanies a recipe or formula or to a combination of recipes, as in a cookbook.
This information was obtained directly from The United States Copyright Office.

What do you mean by "on the market"? Are you talking about a product you actually produce and sell yourself, such as baking cupcakes and selling them in a storefront? Or do you just mean the recipes? If you mean just the recipes then you could do something like publishing a recipe book or starting an online blog where you can feature a recipe of the week, show how it is prepared, and then write about it and request comments from your followers about their thoughts and opinions on your recipe. Please provide more information so that we can better understand how to help you! ![]()

You can also look into ebook publishing on your own. Amazon has details on what to do if you want to put your stuff on the market without having a publishing house involved. A lot of folks I know are doing that. It's not a lot of money, but you're out there. ![]()
Best,
Jim
SO YOU SAYING AMAZON.COM CAN HELP ME HOW ? BUT I STILL WHAT TO GET MY ITEM PUBLISHED BEFORE IT
HITS THE MARKET
Mrs. Knight,
Before going the route of amazon.com, I would come up with a business plan and decide what your goals are. You sound like you want a published recipe book on bookshelves, but at the same time you are talking about getting an actual "physical" food product on the grocery store shelves. Have you spoken to a consultant for guidance?

Dan
Carol,
This thread caught my eye because in my spare time I love cooking and have written many of my own recipes that I share with friends and family. It sounds like this has become more than just a hobby for you though and now you are looking to share your recipes with a large audience.
There have been some great suggestions so far from the community.
1. Look into having your recipes published. There are many of recipe books found in bookstores already, and publishers are always looking for more. If you have unique recipes and a unique cooking style, your recipe book may be what they are looking for.
2. As Jim said, there is electronic publishing that can be done through Amazon. Often times it is a lower cost solution, and how exciting is it when potential customers could be reading your recipes on devices like the Amazon Kindle?
3. Moni made a great suggestion in suggesting starting an online blog. The only issue often times with starting an online blog is that there is less profit in them typically. It will however, get your recipes in front of a larger audience. If you are looking to make profit off of your recipes, this may not be the best option.
4. Following up on option 3, if you are just looking for that larger audience, there is always websites like food.com where you can publish your recipes and have thousands of users pull it up and review it.
Best wishes on your recipe collection.
Regards,
Dan
